Hematite Powder is a weighting material .It is used to increase the density of drilling fluids to control formation pressures having a specific gravity of 4.85 and can be used to increase the density in oil‐and water‐based drilling fluids up to25 lb/gal (3.0 SG). It has a higher specific gravity than barite, and so requires less total product to achieve the same fluid density, but tends to be more abrasive than other weighting materials.

Typical Physical Properties
Physical appearance : Reddish Brown Powder
Specific gravity minimum : 4.85
Passing through 75 microns (ASTM 200 Mesh ) : 98.5%
  • Helps increase the density of drilling fluids up to 26lb/gal (3115kg/m³)
  • Helps control formation pressures.
  • Helps stabilize the borehole.

  • Has a higher specific gravity than barite
  • Has a lower attrition rate than barite
  • Environmentally responsible and nonmagnetic
  • Helps contribute a lower solids content by volume than a comparably weighted barite drilling fluid
Toxicity and Handling
  • Bioassay information is available upon request.
  • Handle as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment and observing the precautions as described on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
Packaging and Storage
  • Hematite is packaged in 50‐lb sacks. It is also available in bulk packaging in1000Kg & 1500Kg Jumbo bags.Store in a dry location and minimize dust.
